Autocratization Deepens Worldwide – But Bright Spots (U-Turns) Are Spreading
Professor Staffan I Lindberg, Director of the V-Dem Institute that issue an annual Democracy Report, will speak on the latest global trends for democracy and autocracy, and what are the drivers of developments. The new v14 version of the V-Dem dataset covers the world up until end-2023 and the latest Democracy Report provides analyses of the countries moving up or down on V-Dem’s Liberal Democracy Index. Among the latest findings we will learn about are that the level of democracy enjoyed by the average global citizen is now back to 1985; that 42 countries are autocratizing while only 18 move upwards on the democracy index; but among the latter we increasingly find “bright spots” – countries making U-turns on a previous path of autocratization.
