Global Health: From the Right to Healthcare to Targeted Interventions – Potentials and Pitfalls of Innovation and Appropriate Technologies

Dr. Jonas Ecke, who has worked on complex humanitarian crises in Liberia, a refugee camp in Ghana, South Sudan, and Yemen, will provide an overview of the evolution of global healthcare programming. He will explore the shift from a rights-based approach in the post-colonial era to more targeted interventions. The talk will examine how concepts such as "appropriate technologies" and "innovation" can play a dual role: enhancing access to healthcare while potentially reinforcing the current austerity-driven global health framework. Dr. Ecke will engage participants in discussing the dilemmas faced by global health practitioners as they balance the need to innovate with the imperative to seek alternatives to austerity.
