Nuclear fusion - climate saviour or eternal vision of the future?

Recent scientific advances give rise to the hope that the realisation of an energy-producing fusion plasma could be imminent. However, this is a necessary but by no means sufficient condition for the construction and operation of commercial nuclear fusion power plants. From the perspective of technology assessment, this depends on the answers to a whole series of questions that are currently still open. These concern power plant technology as well as economic viability, integration into an energy system predominantly powered by renewable energies, environmental impacts (e.g. contribution to climate protection, resource requirements and radioactive inventory, emissions and waste), but also social sustainability issues.
