2024 GAIA Masters Student Paper Award Winner Marion Meyers

We are thrilled to congratulate Marion Meyers, a 2023 ISTP MSc graduate, for being selected as the winner of the 2024 GAIA Masters Student Paper Award for her thesis on machine learning and degrowth.

The external pageGAIA Master Thesis Award is awarded to one student annually for thesis topics covering transdisciplinary environmental and sustainability science. The program aims to honor research that addresses important societal transformations and/or which has discovered new paths of inter- and transdisciplinary environmental or sustainability research.

In her master thesis, A conviviality perspective on machine learning: discussing the appropriateness of artificial intelligence to a degrowth context, Marion Meyers connects the disparate topics of degrowth and artificial intelligence. Her thesis "aims at contributing to the degrowth discourse on technology by outlining a degrowth perspective on Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically machine learning (ML), a digital technology at the center of promises of environmental benefits, strong political support and extremely high investments and research interests. The thesis focuses on the question: could AI be appropriate to a degrowth context? If so, how?"

Marion Meyer's thesis was written under the guidance of Irmi Seidl, external pageLorenz Hilty, and Andrea Vetter. We celebrate Marion's success, and look forward to her future achievements in science and policy.
