Prof. Dr. Rachael Garrett

ISTP Member (2019-2023)Rachael Garrett, formerly a member of ISTP, now holds the position of Moran Professor of Conservation and Development at the University of Cambridge's Department of Geography.

Prof. em. Dr. Janet Hering

ISTP Member (2015-2022): At the end of 2022 Janet Hering retired as Director of the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science & Technology (Eawag) and Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ) and Lausanne (EPFL).

Prof. em. Dr. Bernhard Wehrli

ISTP Member (2013-2022): Bernhard Wehrli retired in 2022 as Professor of Aquatic Chemistry at the Department of Environmental Sciences at ETH Zurich. From 2019 until 2021 Bernhard Wehrli was the ISTP Deputy Director. 

Prof. em. Dr. Gerhard Schmitt

ISTP Member (2015-2020): Gerhard Schmitt was Professor for Information Architecture and Director of the Singapore-​ETH Centre for Global Environmental Sustainability until he got retired in 2020.

Prof. Dr. Alfredo Brillembourg

ISTP Member (2017-​2019): Alfredo Brillembourg received his Bachelor of Art and Architecture in 1984 and his Master of Science in Architectural Design in 1986 from Columbia University.

Prof. em. Dr. Andreas Diekmann

ISTP Member (2015 - 2016): Andreas Diekmann's research areas include the social cooperation and experimental game theory, environmental and population sociology, research methods and statistics.

Prof. Dr. Konstantinos Boulouchos

ISTP Associate Member (2015-2021): Konstantinos Boulouchos holds a diploma (NTU Athens) and a doctoral degree (ETH Zürich) in Mechanical Engineering. After a postdoctoral stay at Princeton University, he joined ETH Zürich as Research Group Leader at the Institute of Energy Technology. In 1955 he became Head of the Combustion Research Laboratory at PSI and 2002 he has been appointed Full Professor at ETH Zürich.

Prof. Dr. Renate Schubert

ISTP Associate Member (2015-2020): Renate Schubert is Professor for Economics at ETH Zurich. She got her Dr. rer. pol. in Tübingen and did her habilitation at the Technical University Darmstadt. Before starting her habilitation she did postgraduate studies at the German Institute for Development in Berlin, did field studies in Costa Rica and worked as a consultant for Lahmeyer International in Frankfurt/M.

Prof. Dr. Gerd Folkers

ISTP Associate Member (2015-2019): Gerd Folkers has been Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the ETH Zurich since April 1st, 1991. On 1 October 2004 he has taken the chair of Collegium Helveticum.

Prof. Dr. Christoph A. Heinrich

ISTP Associate Member (until 2018): Christoph Heinrich studied geology and petrology at ETH Zurich through to his PhD on Alpine high pressure metamorphism. He was appointed Professor of Mineral Resources at ETH Zurich and at the University of Zurich in 1994 and held these positions until his formal retirement in 2019. His research interests focus on geological processes leading to the formation of metallic mineral resources in the earth's interior and the application of research results in mineral exploration, in collaboration with colleagues and students at ETH Zurich.

Prof. Dr. Gertrude Hirsch Hadorn

ISTP Associate Member (2015-2017): Her research includes the application of philosophical methods such as argument analysis to environmental problems and environmental science, conceptions of inter- and transdisciplinary research, environmental ethics and decisions under great uncertainty.

Dr. Michael Brander Wittwer

Senior Researcher (2018-2022): During his time at the ISPT Michael implemented a large-scale randomized control trial on the adoption of hermetic storage technologies among smallholder farmers in Tanzania (PI together with Matthias Huss). In collaboration with SAT, Sokoine University and Helvetas Tanzania. He earned his doctorate, as well as a M.A in Comparative and International Studies at ETH. Before that he got his B.A. of International Affairs from the University of St. Gallen.

Dr. Matthias Huss

Senior Researcher (2018-2022): Matthias is currently a professor at the University of Zurich focusing on researching the causes and socio-economic impacts of food price volatilities, their implications on food security and sustainable development. He also holds a position as lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at the Finance section of the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Basel. He completed his doctoral thesis at the Department of Finance at the University of Basel and studied Economics at the Universities of Basel and Freiburg (Germany). 

Dr. Victor Blanco

Senior Researcher (2017-2020): Victor Blanco received his PhD in Geography from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2016. Victor holds a Master´s Degree in International Nature Conservation from the Lincoln University, jointly taught and awarded with the University of Göttingen, Germany, and a Bachelor´s degree (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Spain. Since 2017, he was postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy of ETH Zurich. He was also group leader of the Swiss Mobility Lab, and thus responsible for coordinating trans-disciplinary research for mobility planning and policy. His research covered questions of participatory regional planning and development – assisted by interactive simulation models – to support regional transformations towards sustainability and resilience.

Dr. Lukas Rudolph

Senior Researcher (2017-2019): Lukas Rudolph received his PhD from LMU Munich, Germany, in 2018. He was a visiting fellow at Duke University for the 2016 EITM Institute. Lukas holds a Magister Artium (M.A. and B.A. equivalent) in Political Science, Intercultural Communication and International Law and a Bachelor degree (B.Sc.) in Economics, both from LMU Munich. Between his studies and his dissertation, he worked for 2 years in the project management of a developmental foundation. He also gathered work experience at a consultancy, with NGOs and a development agency. Since 2017, he was postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Comparative and International Studies and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy of ETH Zurich. His research covered questions of political behavior, preference formation, and the role of institutions in a comparative political economy perspective. Substantively, he has a specific interest in environmental politics and environmental behavior.

Dr. Liam F. Beiser-McGrath

Senior Researcher (2015-2019): Liam Beiser-McGrath  is currently a Senior Research Fellow at Universität Konstanz and Research Associate at ETH Zurich. He was postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS) and the Institute for Science and Technology Policy (ISTP) between 2015 and 2019. He obtained his PhD in Political Science from the University of Essex, United Kingdom in 2010. His research generally focuses on how events and information impact upon environmental, economic, and political outcomes. This research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Science Advances, Nature Climate Change, Political Analysis, Regulation and Governance, and Political Science Research & Methods.

Dr. Jennifer Duyne Barenstein

Senior Researcher (2016-2019): Dr. Jennifer Duyne Barenstein is a social anthropologist specialized in socio-cultural dimensions of housing and urbanization, displacement, resettlement, and post-disaster reconstruction. She has directed several international research projects in South- and South-East Asia and Latin America and was a senior consultant for various international organisations including The World Bank, UN Habitat, FAO, IFAD, SDC and DFID. She joined the ETH CASE in 2016 as a senior researcher and lecturer and is currently directing the MAS ETH in Housing. She supported the ISTP as a postdoc researcher from June 2016 to August 2019.

Dr. Jonas Hagmann

Senior Researcher (2017-2019): Jonas Hagmann was a SNSF Ambizione Fellow, Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy, ETH Zurich. He obtained his  doctorate from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies Geneva in 2010, and MA degrees in international politics from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 2004 and the Graduate Institute in Geneva in 2003. As a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Ambizione Fellow at ETH Zurich’s interdisciplinary Institute of Science, Technology and Policy, he investigated the evolution of integrated urban security dispositives, their relations with democratic ideals writ large, and their dependence on political regimes, cultural values, and traditions of urban planning.

Drífa Atladóttir

Organisational Staff (2022-2024): Drífa Atladóttir oversaw Online Research Communications and Website Administration at ISTP during her time, where she demonstrated a commitment to enhancing accessibility through communications and website design. Simultaneously to working at ISTP, Drífa successfully completed her Master of Science in Science, Technology, and Policy, with a minor in Computer and Data Science from ISTP, ETH. Her academic and professional pursuits are characterized by an interest in the intersection of cybersecurity and technology policy. Prior to coming to ETH, Drífa was a Software Engineer at ON Power (2019-​​2021) and graduated with a B.Sc. in Software Engineering from the University of Iceland (2020).

Nicolas Solenthaler

Organisational Staff (2019-2023): Nicolas Solenthaler started working at the ISTP as a Program Manager in September 2019. He was in charge of all operational issues and part of the program leadership of the continuing education program in Technology and Public Policy (TPP). Nicolas co-developed the program and its curriculum from the idea on. Furthermore, he strategically coordinated the communication and marketing activities at the ISTP and contributed to institutional development supporting the ISTP Director.

Before joining the ISTP, Nicolas worked as a Research Assistant for the Int. Political Economy / Environmental Politics group at ETH Zurich and as a Jr. Project Manager for Swissnex in Boston, the Science Consulate of Switzerland. He holds a Joint Master's degree in Comparative and International Studies from the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science as well as Media and Communication Science from the University of Zurich.

André Semadeni

Organisational Staff (2021-2023): André Semadeni started working for the ISTP as a website administrator and communications and marketing assistant in March 2021. He completed his bachelor's degree from ETH Zurich and is currently a Master’s degree student in Environmental Sciences at ETH where he focuses on sustainable management of natural resources and environmental policy. Before joining the ISTP, André worked as a lecture assistant in Environmental Law and studied abroad in Saint Petersburg (Russia) in 2019. 

Janic Deplazes

Organisational Staff (2019-2021): Janic Deplazes started his position as a social media and marketing assistant as well as website administrator in August 2019. He holds a BSc in Environmental Sciences with a specialization in Atmosphere and Climate. Based on his Bachelor Thesis, he has experience with data analyzation and detecting trend patterns in climate data. From September 2018 to July 2019, he worked for the Federal Office for Nature and Environment GR, where he carried out air pollutant measurements and analysis. In this position he also co-​developed regional climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. Furthermore, he has experience in reporting and the creation of printed and online content. He is currently completing his Master in Atmosphere and Climate Sciences and is doing a Minor in Sustainable Energy Use. His interests include the scientific and sociopolitical component of climate change as well as the energy system transformation.

Marina Voudrisli

Organisational Staff (2019-2020): Marina Voudrisli started working as a student employee in Communications & Marketing at the ISTP in August 2019. She is a qualified Civil Engineer who has completed her undergraduate studies in the Department of Civil Engineering of DUTH in Greece and has received the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in July 2016. She is currently enrolled in the MAS in Science, Technology and Policy at ETH Zurich. As part of the MAS STP programme, she conducted a policy analysis project in climate change adaptation and water resource management. She has previously worked as Research Assistant at ETH Zurich's Health Ethics & Policy Lab. She had also completed her internship at a construction company in Zurich in 2018. Her interests include sustainability strategies, environmental decision-​making, as well as strategic and business development activities, and digital marketing.

Ioannis Fousekis

Organisational Staff (2017-2020): Ioannis Fousekis started working at the ISTP during his master’s studies in Science, Technology and Policy as project manager with the main goal to drive the digital transformation of the Institute and strengthen its online presence. He holds a MSc in Management, Technology, and Economics from ETH Zurich and also a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. 

Dr. Jakob Prüss

Doctoral student (2021-​2024)Jakob was an interdisciplinary doctoral student and research associate at the ISTP and the former Environmental Policy Lab (D-USYS), which has become the Cambridge Conservation and Development Lab in 2022. He was supervised by Rachael Garrett and Anna Barford at the University of Cambridge, where he also served as a visiting scholar and was affiliated with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI). His research focused on circular economy transitions in business and policy, specifically on extended producer responsibility (EPR) and plastic packaging. Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked as a sustainability and circularity consultant at D-MTEC, as an economist/analyst at the OECD, and for the UN in West Africa. He holds graduate degrees from Sciences Po Rennes, Université Paris-Dauphine, and the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.

Samuel Lloyd

Doctoral student (2017-​2023): Sam Lloyd was a PhD candidate at ISTP and the Center for Security Studies (CSS). Previously Sam worked in a variety of research roles in South Africa, Ghana and Thailand. He holds a Masters in Public Health (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) degree from the University of Cape Town, and an MSc in Wellbeing and Human Development from the University of Bath. His current research focuses on the evaluation of policies and interventions to reduce violence in urban settings. Of particular interest is the impact of urban upgrading interventions on types of informal guardianship and other forms of social control in Cape Town, South Africa and Bogota, Colombia.

Clémence Rüeggsegger

Dr. Aleksandr Saprykin

Dr. Chunming Sui

Doctoral student (2018-​2022): Chunming Sui started his PhD in March 2018 at the ISTP of ETH Zurich. He is a member of the Swiss Minerals Observatory research team. This research is a multidisciplinary project which aims at reducing the environmental and social footprint of metals consumed and traded by Switzerland. He is also an enrolled Ph.D. supervised by Prof. Dr. Paolo Burlando in the Hydrology and Water Management Group at the Institute of Environmental Engineering of ETH Zurich. In 2017, he received double MSc degrees in Earth and Environment & International Land and Water Management from Wageningen University and the Research Centre (WUR) in the Netherlands.

Dr. Désirée Ruppen

Doctoral student (2017-​2022): Désirée Ruppen started her doctoral studies at ETH Zurich in September 2017. At the ISTP, she concentrated on the extractive sector, its environmental impacts, and related governance issues. Désirée researched mine waste management and small-scale supply chains, with a special interest in the upstream gold sector and the use of mercury for ore processing. From 2018 ​to 2020, she collaborated with the University of Zimbabwe to implement a citizen science project on water quality monitoring in the coal mining area of Hwange in the North-​West of Zimbabwe. Before this, she earned her master's degree in Earth Sciences with a major in Geology and Geochemistry at ETH Zurich; she also holds a bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences from ETHz.

Doctoral student (2017-​2022): Antoinette van der Merwe started her doctoral studies at ETH Zurich in November 2017, where she worked on developing more responsible gold supply chains. Dr. Christiaan Johannes Joubert

Doctoral student (2017-​​​2021): Christiaan Johannes Joubert started his doctoral studies at the Institute for Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) in November 2017. Christiaan earned his Master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stellenbosch University and his bachelor’s in electronic engineering from the University of Pretoria in South Africa before starting his PhD. His work with the Urban Research Incubator (URI) focused on developing digital models of cities in order to study potential policy impacts. He also worked with the Laboratory for Energy Conversion (LEC) on using large-​scale, digital models to access future energy strategies in electricity and gas and assess future population and mobility scenarios.

Megan Seipp

Doctoral student (2020-​2021): Megan Seipp began her PhD candidacy in February 2020 with the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) and with the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS) at ETH Zurich. Her research was part of the ISTP’s Swiss Minerals Observatory (SMO) team. Megan’s focus was on global behavioural transparency and sustainable practices of companies in the mineral and metal extraction industry. From 2017-2019, Megan completed her Master of Science in Earth Sciences at ETH Zurich. In addition, she holds a BSc in Earth Sciences from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, and an International Engineering Alliance (Sydney Accord) recognised Environmental Technology Diploma completed in Newfoundland, Canada.

Doctoral student (2017-​​​2021): Livia Cabernard completed her PhD studies at the Institute of Environmental Engineering and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy at ETH Zurich. Doctoral student (2017-​2021): Stephanie holds a Master's in Architecture from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and was a PhD Candidate at the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP). She was based in the interdisciplinary research team, the Urban Research Incubator (URI) focusing on urban transformation in Colombia and South Africa toward spatial equalities and more inclusive cities. Stephanie’s work has a focus on design for social change in Post-​Apartheid South Africa and she has worked in her home country on Architecture and Urban Design projects in marginalized neighborhoods. Her current research focuses on evidence-based design approaches to infrastructure planning and implementation in formal settlements in South Africa, with a focus on public lighting infrastructure.

Dr. Michael Walczak

Doctoral student (2017-​2021): Michael was a PhD student at the Urban-​Think Tank Chair of Architecture and Urban Design (U-​TT), Laboratory for energy conversion (LEC) and the ISTP Urban Research Incubator (URI). In his dissertation, he proposed a methodology of collecting, processing and communicating DIGITAL URBAN IMAGINARIES, as a digital model and tool for citizen-centred urban design processes. Michael has studied architecture at the Bern University for Applied Sciences (BFH) in Burgdorf, where he attended a project semester at Stanford University and an exchange semester at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. Prior to starting his PhD, Michael was a research fellow at the Bern University for Applied Sciences.

Doctoral student (2017-​2021): David pursued his PhD at the ISTP, where he investigated public lighting in informal settlements as a member of the Urban Research Incubator (URI). He received an MSc degree in Light and Lighting from The Bartlett (University College London) in 2009. Subsequently he worked as a luminaire product manager in Austria, as a lighting designer and lecturer in China, and again as a luminaire product manager in Switzerland until 2017.

Dr. Fabian Willibald

Doctoral student (2017-​2020): Fabian was a doctoral student at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy since March 2017. Before starting his PhD, he finished his Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences at the Ludwig-​​​Maximilians-​​Universität München, where he also worked as a research assistant.

Fabian’s Ph.D. project was investigating the vulnerability of mountain regions towards socio-economic and climatic changes.

Angélica Serrano Galvis

Doctoral student (2017-2019): Angelica Serrano was a doctoral student at the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy at ETH Zurich. She was part of the Swiss Minerals Observatory team, which aims at identifying policy mixes that could help to efficiently reduce environmental and social impacts related to mining of metals (Gold, Copper, and Lithium). She completed her bachelor in Industrial Engineering at the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) and her master in Economics at the University of Freiburg (Germany). From January to August 2017, she worked as a research assistant at the chair of econometrics at the University of Mannheim. Her research focus is on Applied Development Economics and Applied Microeconometrics.

Hervé Roquet

Doctoral student (2017-2019): Hervé was a doctoral student at the Institute for Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) from February 2017 to 2019. He was a member of the ISTP Urban Research Incubator (URI). His PhD focus was on the stigmatization of marginalized neighbourhood in South Africa and Colombia. Formerly, Hervé worked at the Swiss Federal Office for Gender Equality (FOGE) and as a research assistant at ETHZ Center for Development and Cooperation (NADEL) on a report about the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency (SDC) use and promotion of research evidence. He holds a MSc in Economics with a major in economic policy from the University of Neuchâtel and a BA in Political Science from the University of Lausanne.

Elena Raycheva

Doctoral student (2016-2018): Elena started her doctoral degree at ETH Zurich in the beginning of 2016. She was actively involved in the Swiss Mobility Lab research project. She holds a MSc in Energy Science and Technology from ETH Zurich and a BSc in Aerospace Engineering from TU Delft. Visiting Scientist (2019-2019): Ervyn Norza Cespedes works as a police officer at Colombian National Policy. He holds a master degree in Law Psychology as well as in Political Science. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Political Science. He collaborated with the Urban Research Incubator at ISTP from April 1 to August 30, 2019.
