Formula-E

For the first time, the city of Zurich will host the FIA Formula E championship on the 10th of June, 2018. Formula E races are competitions between only electric-powered race cars that can reach speeds up to 225 km/h. Since the foundation of the championship in 2014, ten racing teams have been competing on city tracks all around the globe. The Zurich City Council has approved the event for 2018 and is open for future installments. The track runs through Zurich’s city center and along Lake Zurich for a total of 2,46 km.

In the context of our research on mobility in the future, we would like to relate to this event by examining public opinion on alternative energy technology, in particular public perception of electric vehicles. The Institute for Science, Technology and Policy engages intensively in research on the intersection of technological innovation and its potential effects on the social, ecological, economic and political environment. We created a short questionnaire to get insights into the public perception of the Formula E event and how it relates to broader attitudes on electric mobility.

The first evaluation of this study is available since 05.06.2018. Abstract:

  • Representative survey of 1'209 adult persons from the canton of Zurich and the surrounding cantons in the period from 15th - 31st May 2018. The statistical error is 5% with a probability +/- 2.82%.
  • Around 50% of the respondents have already heard about the Formula E race in Zurich and know that it takes place.
  • Slightly more than half of the respondents support the race. About a third is against it. The approval for the race in the coming year (2019) is slightly lower at 47%.
  • Respondents estimate the risks of an electric-powered car race similar to those of Formula 1 races by a small majority (56%). Only just under 30% consider the exception to the round-trip racing ban to be unjustified.
  • Around 6.5% of respondents say they want to attend the race. Extrapolated to the population of the surveyed cantons, this could mean that around 175,000 people from these cantons would attend the race.
