Governing and Living with Urban Insecurity in Cape Town Townships

Enlarged view: Flyer for the spring school 2018

This spring school, based in South Africa, focuses on the everyday practices and politics of governing and living with (in-)security in the city of Cape Town. Participants can expect lectures on the Southern Urbanism, socio-spatial exclusion, and everyday security politics; participation in an international urban studies conference and networking with city hall practitioners; training in fieldwork methodologies; and on-site research.

The Spring School offers analytical and empirical insights into the distinctive challenges and dynamics of living with urban (in-)security in a low-income neighbourhood. It entails (1) lectures on the Southern Urbanism, socio-spatial exclusion, and everyday security politics, (2) participation in an international urban studies conference and networking with city hall practitioners, (3) training fieldwork methodology, and (4) on-site research on select dimensions of everyday urban (in-)security in a Cape Town township.
